Dear Friends:
WE'RE BAAAAACK!!!!!!!
After an unexpected hiatus, we would like to welcome all of our members and friends, old and new, back to Second Generation!
Earlier this year, the Board assembled a calendar of events which we hope will peak your interest and renew your spirit of involvement. In the past, our organization has provided a social forum in which to explore the various aspects of our shared unique background and experience. However, in the current world climate, we feel it is necessary to broaden our scope and become more pro-active in other issues. These include, most importantly, the disturbing rise in worldwide antisemitism, Israel and her future, and support for the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust which furthers our goal of teaching both the history and lessons of the Holocaust ... namely tolerance, respect for those different from ourselves, and how best to address those differences.
We had a tremendous kick-off with our May event where almost 100 people heard a presentation by Shoah Foundation Chairman and CEO Doug Greenberg, and were treated to a delightful dessert reception. This was followed by our (almost) Annual Summer Family Picnic at Roxbury Park at which we welcomed new members. In August, we were treated to the phenomenally successful Tchaikovsky Night at the Bowl. Attendees enjoyed a gourmet Hungarian feast at a nearby restaurant before boarding the shuttle to the Bowl where conductor John Mauceri dazzled us with the most thrilling concert we have heard in many years, while the fireworks left stars in our eyes! Rosh Hashana traditionally begins our new calendar year. We kicked off the year by celebrating our new slate of officers at a membership drive cocktail party. This was followed by the Los Angeles premiere of Tim Blake Nelson's powerful film The Grey Zone, which is about the revolt of the 12th zonndercommando unit at Auschwitz.
Many more exciting projects and events are in the planning stages. With your help, we can make 2003 an even more exciting year!
We welcome and encourage your active participation and voice in the organization and look forward to meeting each and every one of you very soon.
Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year.
